Business Competition At Grade School

The First ever, District-wide business competition took place this morning, involving students from four District schools. It’s part of the Youth Entrepreneur Program, or YES57. The students come up with a product they would like to sell, and put together a business plan. They then have to “sell” that product to three judges.
“What we want is to inspire future entrepreneurs,” explains Erin Thomas, Work Experience Coordinator for District 57. “Starting at the Grade School level that, when do get to high school we have a senior competition as well. And then promoting business and then promoting business as one of the future career options.”
In the end, the students not only get to have some fund but win medals and a trophy. But for some, like Brooklyn, a Grade Four student from Vanway Elementary, there are lessons to be learned.
“I learned how to handle a business and that you need to be focused and get lots done.”
Words to live by.
