FCM A Success

At more than 2,000 delegates, this year’s Federation of Canadian Municipalities convention is being hailed a success. And this community was front and centre for more than one reason. On Friday, Mayor Lyn Hall addressed a packed house to talk forestry.
“This is my second opportunity in the last three weeks to be able to talk with the Forest Products Association of Canada,” says Hall. “At the end of the day, it’s about how strong the forest industry has become through its diversification.”
Also, Councillor Garth Frizzell has been elected 3rd Vice President for the FCM.
“Every November, for instance, for eight years, I’ve been going to Ottawa and meeting with MP’s, and Senators and some ambassadors. At the same time, the Executive Committee goes in and meets with the heads of the parties, with the Prime Minister and has ministerial meetings as well to get across municipal priorities to the federal government.”
It means Frizzell will be on the executive of the FCM, while Council Murry Krause is President of the Union of BC Municipalities. Those two working in tandem only bodes well for rural communities across the country.
“It’s something we can really be proud of. They work very hard to attain those positions,” says Hall. “At the end of the day, whenever we, as a region can have a voice at those national and provincial tables, it’s a real plus for us here in Prince George.”
Also a resolution on a poverty reduction strategy put forward by Council was debated at the FCM and passed.
