Busloads of evacuees are arriving in Prince George today, victims of fire evacuation alerts in the Cariboo.
The City says 800 people had registered at the evacuation centre last night. The latest influx is expected to fill the remaining cots at the College of New Caledonia and many of the cots at UNBC’s sport centre. Hundreds of more beds will be installed at the gymnasium at PGSS today.
All evacuees must check in first at the Evacuation Centre at CNC. That makes them eligible to receive vouchers for food and arrangements for lodging.
Meantime the City says residents hoping to help out can consider opening their homes to evacuees or support the cause financially through the BC Fires Appeal fund with the Red Cross. Donations of food and clothing are not needed.
The City says is it relying on dozens of trained volunteers from a pool it had established established. Volunteers must be properly trained before they’re able to assist with Evacuation Centre duties.
