The College of New Caledonia is the one of the main Evacuation Centres for residents who are fleeing the fires in the Cariboo.
As of Sunday morning, about 170 people had registered at the centre. Officials are expected to provide an updated figure Monday morning. Cots are set up at CNC and at the University of Northern BC. The City says it has already spoken to the school district about using school gymnasiums to house evacuees if require . Additional beds and blankets were brought in from Edmonton Sunday.
The City has also opened CN Centre to hundreds of people who were attended a conference at the Exhibition Grounds last week. Many of them are in RV’s and are trapped by the fires and unable to return home. They will be able to use the showers and the washrooms in CN Centre.
While appreciated, the City says offers to donate food, clothing, and other items, can create logistical issues for staff and actually hamper efforts. Instead the City is encouraging people to donate to the British Columbia Fires Appeal with the Canadian Red Cross.
