CKPG News has learned that the 44th annual Billy Barker Days have been cancelled this year.
All parties involved met Monday evening to decide the fate of the event.
The society says the forest fire events taking place in the Quesnel area has forced their hand and that it wouldn’t be right to celebrate, while other are fleeing from the flames.
Shooting Star amusements who organize the rides for the event said in a statement that
“It is with great sadness and disappointment as a result of the fires and road closures, we will be unable to make safe passage back and forth to the Quesnel Billy Barker Days in time for the event.”
Tim Cawdell, Executive Director of the Downtown Quesnel Society, and in charge of the Billy Barker Days Gold Dust Mall event, spoke with CKPG News saying “we didn’t want to hold a party, when so many are suffering from loss and displacement.”
The City says with the displacement of so many evacuees, roads and highways would have been heavily impacted with increased vehicle traffic.
Refunds are being worked on for those who have bought booth fees.
A formal announcement is expected Tuesday Morning.
