Evacuees who have home insurance are covered by forest fires.
Depending on your broker and your policy, some will cover food expenses, hotel and travel after you’ve been displaced, but only under an evacuation order and not an alert.
Applying for new house insurance at this time, is highly unlikely as brokers deal with clients who are either renewing or have questions regarding their policy during the wildfires.
Vice President of Operations at Hub International Barton Insurance Brokers in Prince George, Julie Skelton says there is a myth surrounding coverage on forest fires.
“Forest fires are an act of God and not covered, and that is absolutely incorrect.” said Skelton.
“Forest fire is fire, is fire, so all brokers are fielding that call coming in from customers.”
Skelton adds that Hub Insurance is in talks with the city to set up a main hub to help evacuees deal with their home insurance.
