The BC Independent Investigations Office is looking into the death of a man who was pepper sprayed by RCMP Tuesday around 10:30pm.
Mounties were called to the 1000 block of Central Street West to investigate a complaint of a man looking into vehicles.
When police arrived, the suspect attempted to flee on bicycle. A struggle ensued and more police attended. Pepper spray was used on the suspect to bring him under control. Police say when he appeared to have trouble breathing, an ambulance was called.
The 35-year-old man was pronounced dead in hospital shortly after midnight. The I.I.O. has been summoned to investigate whether there is a connection between the man’s death and the actions of police and whether any officer committed a offense while carrying out their duties. In the meantime, no further information will be released by police.
