The province along with federal ministers met in Prince George Saturday to take a tour of the evacuation reception centre at the College of New Caledonia.
BC Forests Minister Doug Donaldson was joined by Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth and Federal Minister for Public Safety Ralph Goodale.
Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan along with Sport Minister Carla Qualtrough also made an appearance.
Goodale says the federal government is ready to help evacuees with financial support.
“We are working on the arithmetic right now as there’s an established formula for dealing with disasters.” said Goodale.
“Our purpose here today is to first of all say thank you to the first responders.”
The public safety minister says that the province is in the lead, but the federal government is there to respond to any requests, which Goodale says includes a broad request financially.
“The arithmetic isn’t done. Expenses are still accumulating, as this typically takes some time.”
“Cash flow isn’t the immediate issue between governments.” said Goodale.
Meantime, Farnworth says although evacuees need the financial help, the priority right now is fighting fires.
“Right now its been the initial 100 million dollar fund” said Farnworth.
“The economic costs are significant. Its just at the start.”
Farnworth is hoping there could be good news on re-entry soon, but that it’s up to the operations command in the evacuated areas.
“We certainly hope that people are able to get back to their homes as son as possible.”
