While numbers have not yet been released, most of the evacuees have left or are preparing to leave Prince George.
“I have driven around to the various sites where RV’ers were and we are hearing those sites virtually empty now,” says Mayor Lyn Hall. “We have heard from hotels that people have left. We don’t have many people at our evacuation centre at UNBC.”
The City is reducing the emergency operations staff and volunteers. “We are starting to wind it down a bit,” says Mayor Hall, “but we still have our emergency operation team on alert, like many of the fire districts in the province.”
The emergency operation team will continue to meet regularly. The City will now put more staff resources into major projects, like the construction of the Hart water system.
A debriefing will be held in the fall. “We know we could have done things better,” says Mayor Hall. “We know where we are going to do things better if it ever happens again, but there were numerable areas where we did things very, very well.”
