It’s been a number of years since residents in Quesnel were promised a new sports arena, and this weekend that promise will become reality as the $20.6 million dollar West Fraser Centre is set to open its doors.
A sold out 54-40 concert will be the first event held Saturday night before the Canucks alumni game is held on Sunday with the official ribbon cutting ceremony.
Capacity of the new arena is just over 1300 seats and Mayor Bob Simpson says the project is on time and on budget.
Simpson adds that the city has asked the curling club about possibly holding the provincial bonspiel at the new facility as well as lacrosse games.
He suggests the facility will be able to meet the intended purposes of being a multi-faceted facility.
The 62 year old Arena 1 was demolished to make way for a new parking lot to accommodate guests.
