Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid says the provincial government is committed to funding school districts that have several rurals schools, but says the problem comes down to enrolment numbers.
Margaret MacDiarmid says that problem is particularly acute in School District 57, where enrolment has gone down by about 25 percent. She says the district has 4-thousand-500 fewer students now than in 2000.
MacDiarmid says the funding has remained the same and overall is up 32 percent on a funding-per-pupil basis. She says one of the things the government is looking at is neighbourhood learning centres, in which schools are used in off hours for such things as daycare centres and other community purposes.
