The toughest driving laws in the country go into effect in B.C. on September 20th. We've already told you about the penalties for driving more than 40 kilometres over the posted speed limit. Starting on the 20th ,you will feel the consequences of getting caught drinking and driving immediately. If you fail a blow test on the roadside here's what will happen. An immediate 90-day driving ban, a 5-hundred dollar fine, 250-dollar drivers licence reinstatement fee, mandatory Responsible Drivers Program at a cost of 800-dollars, one-year Ignition Interlock...17-hundred and 30-dollars. That totals 4-thousand-60-dollars, and does not include possible criminal charges, legal fees, or court-ordered fines or penalties. We're told the Solicitor-general has an extremely hard-hitting package of penalties he'll be announcing later this month. However no one is commenting so as not to steal the minister's thunder.
