A collision between an ambulance and a van in Hixon has claimed the life of one person, injured several others and closed Highway 97 overnight. The crash occurred around 5:30 Thursday afternoon. Police say the ambulance and van collided, sending the ambulance into a power pole. A power line was severed and a natural gas line was also ripped open. Police say the ambulance was transporting a critically injured person from Quesnel to the University Hospital of Northern BC in Prince George. The patient was declared dead at the scene. The ambulance also contained a doctor and a nurse who were providing medical attention to the patient. They suffered minor injuries along with two paramedics and five people in the van. As a result of the natural gas line break, emergency crews evacuated a nearby trailer park and all others within a half mile radius until the line was repaired. The highway has been closed in both directions and no detour has been set up. It's expected Highway 97 will remain closed through the night.
