French Immersion Parents Fight PDF Print E-mail

A recommendation to the Board of Education is to amalgamate the four French Immersion programs at Austin Road, Heather Park, College Heights Elementary and Spruceland into one single school, located at John McInnis School. But the parents on hand last night argued John McInnis will not be able to accommodate all the students in French Immersion, pointing out it is the only program with projected increases in enrolment. Rather, they suggested, to address congestion issues in those schools, the district could create another French-English, dual-track school. Or, perhaps move Spruceland a block away, to Lakewood Junior Secondary School. Arguing, a single-track, French-only school would mean long commutes for many, and the possibility of parents removing their child from French Immersion altogether. The Board has a finel meeting at Giscome tonight, with a school closure decision on March 30th.
